I’ve long wanted the kind of power Obsidain’s Dataview plug-in offers … but each time I’ve tried to fiddle with it, I’ve gotten disappointing and frustrating results. By contrast, Tana’s data wrangling powers are remarkably straightforward and much easier for non-programmers to understand. Obsidian’s near-magical data-juggling requires users to engage in some fairly sophisticated and finicky programming. While watching these, I began to perceive a key difference between Obsidian and Tana. When I came back, no one seemed to be talking about anything else.Īs will be the case for many people, my introduction to Tana came from watching Cortex Futura’s introductory videos. Before I left, no one in my feed had ever mentioned Tana. So … why bother looking into Tana (especially an early release version of it) at all? Tana’s Appealįor me, Tana came out of nowhere, after I returned from a month-long sabbatical from social media. While Obsidian is not a perfect tool, it is very close to being the perfect tool for me. I love Obsidian’s “trust no one” approach to security. I love that Obsidian saves them in a human-readable format. I love that my files live on my hard drive. That said: Obsidian is, by far, the superior tool for capturing, organizing, linking, and developing ideas in ways that writers and researchers will appreciate. Ulysses has features that make it, by far, the better environment for piecing together long form texts in the formats professional publishers will require. While I would not recommend you do so, I’ve actually written an entire 75,000-word novel in Obsidian. While curious about other tools (I’ve dallied with Logseq and Scrintal), I’ve been very, very satisfied with Obsidian’s unique blend of practicality, extensibility, privacy, and dependability. (By the time these latter issues were addressed, I no longer had the need or desire to continue using Roam.)įor more than a year now, I’ve been a passionate user of Obsidian - and continue to be. After a year of use, though, I began to have concerns: about its mercurial founder, about certain cults of personality springing up within the community, and about the lack of privacy, security, and off-line accessibility. Roam Research was my first experience with a modern tool for thought, and I loved its outliner format, backlinks, and community. I come to Tana as a previous user of Evernote, Notational Velocity, Bear, and DevonThink. Life Before Tanaīefore taking anyone’s advice on what tools to consider, I think you should know a little about that person’s background and biases. Be informed, too, that this post ends with … a warning. This post compiles my experience with Tana so far: what I love about it, what I’ve learned from it, what I think it lacks, and what I long for. I’m deeply grateful, and I hope you’ll choose to reveal yourself at some point, just so I can say thank you directly.) Based on how long others have waited, I can only assume I have a mysterious and generous benefactor who has, so far, chosen not to reveal him/her/themself. After watching Cortex Futura’s introductory videos, I signed up for the waiting list … and joined what seemed like a million other people hoping for an invitation to take the “early access” version of Tana for a test drive. With a growing number of vocal online advocates … a flood of social media buzz … an increasing community of converts from Notion, Roam, Logseq, and Obsidian … and a long line of people clamoring for early access, Tana has premiered to higher levels of enthusiasm - and, occasionally, animosity - than any tool for thought I’ve encountered.ĭespite my passion for Obsidian - and my plans to be on a cruise ship for two weeks of vacation - I found myself drawn into the hubbub around Tana.

The problem is that the genre is the ARPG, and the key ideas - the core concepts that are at the very heart of any ARPG worthy of the name - are hitting things, and loot. Hentzau: Oh, that’s certainly what Torchlight 2 does. And it does it in a fraction of the time and for a fraction of the cost that, yes, Diablo 3 tries to. What Torchlight 2 does is take a genre, find out every idea that is key and core to it, and then removes everything else. Nor is there anything that feels so polished, cinematic, or packed with human flourishes that it deserves a place in history as a shining example of videogame development. Sinny: There’s nothing here that moves the industry forward or emerges from a flock of doves to the strains of a string quartet. This should be a relatively even-handed review, I should think! I’ll start with the sweeping statements then: Torchlight 2 isn’t worth any awards this year, but it’s one of the best purchases I’ve made. Sinny: So we’ve got me, a guy who picked it up specifically as an antidote to Diablo 3, Hent, who bought it to hold him over until Diablo 3, and then Jim in the middle, who can’t work out whether to punch it in the crotch or marry it. “The worst game ever made, made perfectly.” I found my old review of it a few weeks ago, it was very succinct. I got obsessed with it for a week, rushed through it and ended up despising not only the game, but myself. I’ve always shied away from these obsessive-compulsive clicky clicky RPGS, but I played Torchlight until the tendons in my wrist ached and that is pretty rare because you could crack nuts with them or use them for bridge suspension they are just that strong. Jim: I think ambivalent is nowhere near strong enough to describe my love-hate relationship with the original. Then Diablo 3 was released, and almost immediately afterwards the Torchlight 2 preorder came up, and at this point I’d been waiting so long I blindly jumped aboard the nearest 4-pack without really paying attention to what Diablo 3 might have meant for the genre in general. Largely it was a matter of inertia Torchlight 2 was going to come out before Diablo 3, it was going to provide an ARPG fix while Blizzard put the finishing touches on their Ecce Homo mural, it wouldn’t matter so much that it was good just so long as it existed. Trying to peer back through the thick fog of boredom and loathing to see what my thought process was before I bought the game. Hentzau: I have been trying to figure that out for the last five minutes. I know Jim was somewhat ambivalent towards the original, why did you get Torchlight 2, Hent? Torchlight was all of those things, and Torchlight 2 promised to patch up what was missing. Sinny: I bought it because ARPGs feel like games that should be cheap, simple and quick to play. Hentzau: So we’re all sitting here, trying to figure out how to kickstart this review/discussion. We zoom in further, to reveal they’re…talking about Torchlight 2. Observing the noble cut of their clothes, the fine pleating of their beards and the ostentatious jangle of their chains and jewellery, one would suppose these gentlemen to be talking of matters of great import, of the rise of kingdoms or the fall of grain prices. The camera focuses in on one table to reveal three men deep in discussion. The sound of quaffing and carousing fills the air, along with the twangs of some unmentionable stringed instrument. Bobby said she and her group should move outside of their comfort zone in order to be successful. Kahanna realized that she went home during an acting challenge where Bobby was a guest judge, so his return on the same episode she’d be acting in again felt like a full circle moment for her to show her own growth. Bobby picked up on the energy between the two as two pals and urged them to play up that chemistry on stage. Jessica explained to Bobby and Ru that she feels more confident going into this challenge than she would have in season 2 because she’s better with the English language and that will help her comedic timing. Ru stopped by for a visit with SNL alum Bobby Moynihan in order to give the queens some last minute advice ahead of their live performances. Jaymes tried to help Naysha with her accent, suggesting that she change the voice that was already getting worn out. LaLa noticed that Naysha was doing her best to create a character within her role, but she didn’t think it was working. The cold open had the largest cast, but Jaymes was confident that she could stand out in the group despite not being a trained actor. Naysha decided to take a risk and opt into the less desired role, convinced that she could still be a success at it. Kasha Davis chose the landscaping company commercial, Kandy took on the role of the opening monologue, and for the cold open, LaLa, Jaymes, and Kahanna all claimed their parts, leaving Naysha Lopez and Heidi N Closet fighting over the last unclaimed news anchor role. Alexis Michelle and Darienne chose the Jersey talk show, Jimbo, Jessica Wild and Mrs. That was a thinly veiled way of encouraging the girls to not worry about getting ugly in this comedy challenge.Īfter reading through the scripts, the queens hammered out who would be taking on what sketches. Ru warned the queens that they shouldn’t just be pretty, but should focus on being funny as well. The next morning, Ru announced the next maxi challenge, the sketch comedy show “RDR Live.” In the show, they’d have to choose parts and rehearse before performing their sketches live in front of the judges. That part is a huge deal for the many artists they employ to design their looks who can have huge career boosts of their own because of the exposure. Darienne promised to not hold their votes against them, but it did stick out that there are three queens who were willing to see her leave the competition early.Įveryone was excited about the new “Fame Games” twist because not only does it give the fans a say in who goes home with money, but it also makes it so that all of the looks they had created for the show will be seen and have a place in the competition regardless of their eliminations. LaLa Ri and Jaymes Mansfield also admitted to their votes for the same reason as Kandy. Kandy Muse admitted straight away that she voted against Darienne because she was swayed in “Untucked” by Monica’s plea to be saved because she has nothing to go back to without the show. In the group vote, there were four votes against Darienne. First, Kahanna revealed that she would have eliminated Monica if it was up to her, choosing to protect Darienne Lake because they were on the same team. Check out our full recap of episode 2 below:įollowing Kahanna Montrese‘s top performance and Monica Beverly Hillz‘s elimination, the queens sat down to take a look at all the lipsticks that were cast in the ballot. Hybrid orbitals do not exist in isolated atoms. The following ideas are important in understanding hybridization: This description is more consistent with the experimental structure. (b) Two of the hybrid orbitals on oxygen contain lone pairs, and the other two overlap with the 1 s orbitals of hydrogen atoms to form the O–H bonds in H 2O. The observed angle of 104.5° is experimental evidence for which quantum-mechanical calculations give a useful explanation: Valence bond theory must include a hybridization component to give accurate predictions.įigure 8.7 (a) A water molecule has four regions of electron density, so VSEPR theory predicts a tetrahedral arrangement of hybrid orbitals. Consequently, the overlap of the O and H orbitals should result in a tetrahedral bond angle (109.5°). The valence orbitals in an oxygen atom in a water molecule differ they consist of four equivalent hybrid orbitals that point approximately toward the corners of a tetrahedron ( Figure 8.7). The valence orbitals in an isolated oxygen atom are a 2 s orbital and three 2 p orbitals. The new orbitals that result are called hybrid orbitals. This process of combining the wave functions for atomic orbitals is called hybridization and is mathematically accomplished by the linear combination of atomic orbitals, LCAO, (a technique that we will encounter again later). When atoms are bound together in a molecule, the wave functions combine to produce new mathematical descriptions that have different shapes. The mathematical expression known as the wave function, ψ, contains information about each orbital and the wavelike properties of electrons in an isolated atom. Quantum-mechanical calculations suggest why the observed bond angles in H 2O differ from those predicted by the overlap of the 1 s orbital of the hydrogen atoms with the 2 p orbitals of the oxygen atom. This is not consistent with experimental evidence. The prediction of the valence bond theory model does not match the real-world observations of a water molecule a different model is needed.įigure 8.6 The hypothetical overlap of two of the 2 p orbitals on an oxygen atom (red) with the 1 s orbitals of two hydrogen atoms (blue) would produce a bond angle of 90°. Experimental evidence shows that the bond angle is 104.5°, not 90°. If this were the case, the bond angle would be 90°, as shown in Figure 8.6, because p orbitals are perpendicular to each other. Valence bond theory would predict that the two O–H bonds form from the overlap of these two 2 p orbitals with the 1 s orbitals of the hydrogen atoms. Oxygen has the electron configuration 1 s 22 s 22 p 4, with two unpaired electrons (one in each of the two 2 p orbitals). As an example, let us consider the water molecule, in which we have one oxygen atom bonding to two hydrogen atoms. However, to understand how molecules with more than two atoms form stable bonds, we require a more detailed model. Thinking in terms of overlapping atomic orbitals is one way for us to explain how chemical bonds form in diatomic molecules. Determine the hybrid orbitals associated with various molecular geometries.Explain the concept of atomic orbital hybridization.By the end of this section, you will be able to: I also could feel it was well-made, a top quality. I noticed it had an odd shape – sorta like a 90 degree angle at the edge of the plates. The TYME iron comes with a pretty sleeve for protection and my own travel. It was well sealed and I had the assurance that it was protected from it’s travel from the facility to my home. When my TYME iron arrived it was in a pretty box. I was mesmerized by the video and how the model got curls with such ease – I had to try this product. I was first introduced to TYME Iron Pro 2-in-1 Hair Curler and Straightener in my Facebook feed – has anyone else seen them. This was the first step is choosing quality over quantity and when investing a little bit more, left me with healthier hair and less maintenance (and cost) in the long run! In my mid twenties I realized, I needed protective metal plates to keep my looking healthy and tamed. As I got older and had more money, I bought my first expensive hair iron and I never went back. As I got older, I invested in a cheaper hair iron but my hair was never as straight as with the clothing iron. I am not sure that I even knew what one was. Using a clothing iron was “frugal” but gave my hair awful results. This was a cheap solution and gave me the immediate fix I craved and an incredible straight hairstyle. I would lay my hair strand one at a time on the ironing board and they would get as close to my scalp as they could without burning me. Not only is it thick, it is long and will hold moisture forever! In college, without a penny to my name, I would beg my girlfriends to iron my hair. Still behaving stupidly (yes, I can use that word on myself) I returned back to the same salon (because fixing their mistake was free.) This partially fixed the color but left me with dry, over processed hair – total waste of the original money I invested, not to mention the time! It took me a total of 8 hours plus travel time and in return gave me lost work revenue – never again! I was left with breakage and an awful hair color. I invested in cheap salon for a hair color and highlights. I am left with a brand new pair of shoes that never gets worn and each pair ends up being a waste of money – those pairs add up, they add up to the cost of if I had just invested in a quality pair!Īnother experience that gave me a wise lesson was my hair. This gives them more shoes however I will get complaints from them about the shoes hurting their feet and in the end won’t wear them. I learned that I can buy my girls plenty of pretty, cheap shoes. One experience that taught me well was kids’ shoes. Through experience, however, I did learn the difference between quantity verses quality and cheap verses well-made. Leaving my parent’s nest, I understood I needed to make money, save wisely and spend little. Years later, many jobs, many incomes and the establishing and growth of a family this instilled philosophy has not changed, in fact, it’s only deepened. From the time I was little, they taught me it’s importance, how to save, and how to spend wisely. One of the biggest gifts my parents gave me was the knowledge of money. Some players are able to play games like normal at this point, but many more are still affected by this long-running Xbox Network outage. Xbox Support has listed the latter issue with "We're close to resolving the issue" for several hours, now, with no significant improvement. ET - Xbox Network still down over seven hours later We'll continue to monitor the situation and update this space. Unfortunately, other issues preventing Xbox Cloud Gaming sessions or digital games from launching are still plaguing players, and the Xbox team is continuing to investigate them. The Xbox team has reported that Xbox Network issues preventing players from making purchases in the Microsoft Store should be resolved. ET - Issues with the Microsoft Store should be resolved, but other problems remain We'll continue to monitor the situation, and update this space as we hear more. Hopefully, the Xbox Network outage won't last long, and players will quickly be able to return to their favorite Xbox games without any issues. If you're able to launch a game, it should function like normal, including cloud saves, Achievements, and more. At least for now, the Xbox Network outage isn't affecting anything related to Xbox Accounts, multiplayer gaming, social features, or other connected services and features. There appears to be little players can do to avoid these issues, aside from resorting to playing games from physical discs (if that's an option for you) or, potentially, disconnecting from the internet and playing offline.
Still, one Ottawa resident, who declined to give her last name, said it is unsurprising the small government town is home to so many Ashley Madison clients. But with a stable family life still a badge of success, an Ashley Madison subscription may be preferable to divorce, she said. In a city full of professionals with demanding careers, many in government, Cini said marriage may come under more strain than usual. "In our buttoned-down city, it may not be acceptable to openly explore outside of a committed relationship," said Ottawa marriage counselor Nataxja Cini. The hackers want Avid Life to shut down the website, as well as a second one it runs, which is widely described as a "sugar daddy site," but has no issues with, a site for older women looking for hookups. The Ottawa mayor's office and city council either declined to comment or did not return emails. The hotbed of infidelity was also the seat of power: The top postal code for new members matched that of Parliament Hill, according to Avid Live chief executive Noel Biderman in a newspaper report published earlier this year.īiderman said capital cities around the world typically top subscription rates, a phenomenon he chalks up to "power, fame and opportunity," along with the risk-taking personalities that find themselves in political cities. "But there's going to be a lot of people with lots of explaining to do." "If it had been organized, they wouldn't have advertised it," said a law enforcement source who spoke on condition of anonymity. The hackers, who referred to customers as "cheating dirtbags who deserve no discretion," appear uninterested in blackmailing individual clients, unlike an organized crime outfit. That means, for now at least, the perpetrators are driven by ideological and not commercial motives. Avid Life has also said it is convinced the hackers were formerly connected to the company. The one bright spot for millions of Ashley Madison's nervous clients is that the hack appears to be an inside job, according to police and intelligence sources. "I think a lot of people will be questioned tonight at dinner," added colleague Ali Cross, 28. "Everybody says Ottawa is a sleepy town and here we are with 200,000 people running around on each other," said municipal employee Jon Weaks, 27, as he took a break at an outdoor cafe near the nation's Parliament. The website's Canadian parent, Avid Life Media, said it had since secured the site and was working with law enforcement agencies to trace those behind the attack. Hackers threatened to leak details including the credit card information, nude photos, sexual fantasies and real names of as many as 37 million customers worldwide of Ashley Madison, which uses the slogan: "Life is short. The case was dismissed earlier this year. A former employee sued Avid Life, saying she had developed debilitating wrist pain, insomnia and anxiety while writing 1,000 fake profiles for a Brazilian version of Ashley Madison, according to court records. King describes the leak as “a shame”, given that “the fun is trying to piece together the little bits that given us and predict the story or discuss where you want the game to go… I know a lot of people that have gone completely dark on the internet – they’ve muted all the keywords to do with Zelda just to survive until the game comes out and remain unspoiled,” he says. Still, when so many people are working on a single title – from developers and designers to marketing staff – leaks are all but a given, which is what happened last month, when Tears of the Kingdom leaked in full via early retail copies. Along with new fans has come a level of scrutiny on the historically secretive Nintendo, which has been keen to keep the secrets contained within Tears of the Kingdom under lock and key. The fact that Breath of the Wild is so unbothered about asking its player to advance the story means that it has a far less steep learning curve than many other mainstream adventures, and can be as rewarding for beginners as for seasoned gamers accordingly, its lifetime sales are nearly 10 times that of Skyward Sword.Īnticipation for Tears of the Kingdom – which uses the same design as Breath of the Wild and picks up where that game left off, while adding underground and sky zones – is, perhaps, the highest it’s ever been for a game in the Zelda series. For my first dozen hours or so playing, I barely completed any quests or advanced the story at all, instead choosing to wander around picking up items and seeing what I could do with them outside the confines of the game’s narrative. I, like many others, had never really played a video game before I played Breath of the Wild it was the first game I ever finished, and I found that the endlessly explorable open world was what made it so easy to pick up. Writing for The Verge last year, tech writer Sam Byford said that the game “has loomed over the genre since it launched”, describing its approach as “revolutionary” and noting that the game’s open world “is the entire point of the game, providing both the motivation and the reward”. No two players have the same experience playing Breath of the Wild: some have cottoned on entirely to the game’s cooking mechanics, and have spent hours searching for the best ingredients with which to make, say, a restorative fish stew others may have breezed past early challenges and gone straight into the game’s final boss battle, a showdown with long-running series antagonist Ganon in the villain-infested ruins of a gothic castle at the centre of the map.Īt the time of its release, Breath of the Wild was seen as a landmark in game design, and its complex but deeply intuitive open world – which is distinctive not just for its beautiful and interesting geography, but because of its complicated, realistic physics – is still a high water-mark for open world role-playing games (RPGs). In response to that game’s reception, Nintendo retooled Zelda, designing Breath of the Wild as a game defined by its vast open world, in which players can do basically whatever they want without having to hew to the whims of the narrative at all. “Skyward Sword was very formulaic and very linear,” says King. It saw a lukewarm reaction from fans, thanks to finicky gameplay and an ultra-linear story that belies the expansive feel of the other games. Still, the game’s popularity has come in peaks and troughs over the years, with interest reaching a nadir in 2011 with the release of the complex Wii game Skyward Sword. Since its debut, the series has had an ardent core fanbase, drawn to its distinctive design hallmarks – in-game worlds defined by verdant landscapes and imaginatively designed creatures – and classic coming-of-age narratives. The game was an instant success, and led to countless sequels over the next three decades. The Legend of Zelda debuted in 1986 with a vibrant, then-groundbreaking action role-playing game for the Nintendo Entertainment System that was designed to feel like, developers said, a “miniature garden that can put inside their drawer”. Anticipation is at fever pitch … The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. |
